The Importance Of Being A Well-Rounded Individual

Carly Cook

Going through your late teenage and early adult years you are constantly being told that you have to be well-rounded. You hear it from teachers, colleges, employers, medical schools, grad schools, and so many others. You may be sick of hearing it but there is a reason so many outlets stress its importance. Being well rounded is defined as having a defined and broad education background. Which in english means knowing a small amount about many different things.
The whole point of being well rounded is to broaden your knowledge so to relate to more people and better your own person. By expanding your education outside of your comfort zone you add more depth to your existing knowledge. Personally, I am on the path to medical school. The number one piece of advice I have received from my peers and mentors is to show that you are well rounded. Admissions at any college are looking for a student who is not just good at one specific thing. They like to see that a student has many layers and is actually a person and not just a homework performing robot.
The 3 R's of being well-rounded include responsibility, resilience, and resourcefulness. Master these and you are surely going to rise above the competition. Humans are meant to absorb information. While our minds are not designed to remember every last detail, people should have a basic understanding of a variety of topics so that understanding other facts about those subjects, when necessary, is possible.
