Two gentlemen from Australia, Andrew Turton and Pete Ceglinski, have created a rubbish bin known as Seabin, that collects unwanted materials that float on oceans and other water bodies.
The two men’s automated invention is said to be able to collect plastic bottles, paper, oil, fuel, and detergent floating on the ocean.
The material was built as a cheap and low maintenance alternative to trash boats. It also designed for the water of marinas, private pontoons, inland waterways, residential lakes, harbors, water ways, ports and yacht clubs.
According to the Seabin Project, the Seabin is situated on the surface of the water, and is plumbed into a shore based water pump on the dock. The water gets sucked into the Seabin, bringing all floating debris and floating liquids into the Seabin. It then catches all the floating debris inside the Seabin, and the water then flows out through the bottom of the bin and up into the pump on the dock.
The water then flows through the pump, where there is an option of installing an oil/water separator, and clean water then flows back into the ocean. It said the process is constant, operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year.
Inside the Seabin, there is a natural fiber known as the catch bag—which collects all the floating debris. When this is full or near to full, the worker monitoring it simply replaces the catch bag with another one. The collected debris is then disposed of responsibly. The catch bag is then cleaned, allowing it to be reused once the Seabin needs to be emptied again. Even when the Seabin is full, it still works. The flow of the water simply pulls all the surrounding floating debris against the Seabin, and keeps it intact. The worker monitoring the Seabin is then able to scoop up the surrounding debris, and then change the catch bag as normal.

The inventors say marinas, ports and yacht clubs are the perfect places to start cleaning the oceans. According to them, there are no huge open ocean swells or storms inside the marinas. It is a relatively controlled environment. The wind and currents are constantly moving the floating debris around in oceans and in every port, marina or yacht club. And there is always some heavy pollution in these areas, based on the predominant wind and current directions.
“We have designed the size of the Seabin and catch bag for safe working load for one person to safely change the catch bag. We start close to the source of the problem in a controlled environment. One of the goals is to make the Seabin from our own plastics to create another Seabin to capture more, it’s a domino effect. The second goal is to create a world where we don’t need the Seabin,” the inventors wrote on their website.
Currently, they have finished working on a perfect prototype. They are now appealing for funds, so they are able to produce more.
