Attempts to tie Trump to Russia are distracting US liberals from their real problems

*There's a distraction that's so much bigger than this article suggests. I've blogged quite a few: Trump's, "Ban" will kill American's ability for dual citizenship. Any of the 3 current forms of the Health Care bills will be devastating to the middle and lower classes. No one seems to be monitoring the growing pharmaceutical drug epidemic. Not one person I know has even mentioned the calculated growing US debt etc. Then I get the most idiotic questions, "Why don't you want to live here"?

In the months following Donald Trump’s surprise victory in the US presidential election, it has become increasingly clear that the Democratic party is unwilling—and perhaps unable—to come to terms with the country’s post-election reality. The party’s inability to accept defeat has since manifested itself through an increasingly hysterical campaign to blame Hillary Clinton’s defeat on alleged Russian interference.
The charge that Russia, in the words of respected Russia expert and longtime Clinton associate Strobe Talbott, breached “the firewall of American democracy” has been repeated so often and by so many that it has taken on the patina of fact. It has become an article of faith, among disappointed Clinton partisans, mainstream political commentatorsDemocrats on Capitol Hill and Republicans like senator Lindsey Graham, that the election was tainted and that Trump’s legitimacy as president is questionable, at best.
The tendency to blame domestic disappointments on foreign bogeymen is not new and is perhaps better understood as a wave that periodically surfaces, then temporarily subsumes American politics. Indeed, this current reliance on conspiracy theories and accusations of unpatriotic disloyalty has been a feature, not a bug, of discourse regarding Russia since the onset of the crisis in Ukraine in early 2014. Yet this paranoia is, so far, little more than a distraction. By blaming Clinton’s loss on Russia, the political establishment is able to largely ignore the way economic, trade, and foreign policies failed large numbers of Americans. And, by elevating Vladimir Putin to supervillain status, this neo-McCarthyism is hindering debate and undermining legitimate attempts to deescalate tensions with our Russian colleagues.
MSNBC’s house intellectual Rachel Maddow has been among the most vociferous and, at times, most incisive critics of president Trump. Yet she also recently questioned whether Trump is actually under the control of the Kremlin. During her broadcast on March 9, Maddow told viewers that what she finds “particularly unsettling” is that “we are also starting to see what may be signs of continuing [Russian] influence in our country. Not just during the campaign but during the administration. Basically, signs of what could be a continuing operation.” [emphasis mine.]
That Maddow, a popular and respected liberal voice, would indulge in rhetoric of this sort is a worrying sign given the lack of hard evidence it is based on. While many have convinced themselves that Russia tipped the scale of the election toward Trump, the more sinister allegations of Putin infiltrating the White House have not been born out. Even the former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper admitted in an interview with NBC’s Chuck Todd in early March that he has “no knowledge” and “no evidence” of “collusion” between Russia and the Trump campaign.
Yet Maddow’s charge recalls some of the worst excesses of the early 1950’s, when our political life was marred by the Red Scare and a climate of paranoia prevailed. Unsubstantiated allegations, not dissimilar to the kind Maddow just levied, were characteristic of that era. Back then, none other than senator Joseph McCarthy himself, wondered: “How can we account for our present situation unless we believe that men high in this government are concerting to deliver us to disaster?” Several years later, Robert W. Welch, founder of the far-right John Birch Society, accused president Dwight D. Eisenhower of being a “a dedicated, conscious agent of the Communist conspiracy.”
It might be tempting to dismiss the efforts of prominent Democrats to paint Trump as a “Manchurian President” as a temporary overreaction to the (thus far still unsubstantiated) charges that Russia “hacked” the 2016 presidential election. However, to do so would be to miss what has become an ugly and persistent feature of American discourse about Russia over the past several years.

The Importance Of Being A Well-Rounded Individual

Carly Cook

Going through your late teenage and early adult years you are constantly being told that you have to be well-rounded. You hear it from teachers, colleges, employers, medical schools, grad schools, and so many others. You may be sick of hearing it but there is a reason so many outlets stress its importance. Being well rounded is defined as having a defined and broad education background. Which in english means knowing a small amount about many different things.
The whole point of being well rounded is to broaden your knowledge so to relate to more people and better your own person. By expanding your education outside of your comfort zone you add more depth to your existing knowledge. Personally, I am on the path to medical school. The number one piece of advice I have received from my peers and mentors is to show that you are well rounded. Admissions at any college are looking for a student who is not just good at one specific thing. They like to see that a student has many layers and is actually a person and not just a homework performing robot.
The 3 R's of being well-rounded include responsibility, resilience, and resourcefulness. Master these and you are surely going to rise above the competition. Humans are meant to absorb information. While our minds are not designed to remember every last detail, people should have a basic understanding of a variety of topics so that understanding other facts about those subjects, when necessary, is possible.

10 Ways To Grow Your Business With Facebook

Every day, Facebook helps hundreds of thousands of small businesses around the world to achieve their goals. Here are ten ways you can grow your business, starting today.
1. Start the conversation
What’s important to your customers? What engages them? Start the conversation and find out. Not only is engagement proven to make customers more likely to buy, it also helps brands build up a loyal community, keeping you in touch with what people think, want and buy. Fashion retailer iKRUSH keeps the conversation flowing on its popular Facebook Page, where it shares daily fashion tips, news and humour with a loyal fanbase.
2. Motivate people
Want people to follow your Page or buy your product? Give them a good reason to take action. Competitions and offers can help businesses reach wider audiences and gain new customers—often within a short period of time. Personalised gift site Merci Maman Boutique found that it could gain shares and new fans, then convert them to customers through Page posts featuring discount codes.

3. Make your customers part of your story
Happy customers are your ultimate business asset. By encouraging customers to share their feedback on your products and services, not only do you deepen engagement and build trust, you’ll also have the opportunity to reach wider audiences. Swedish fashion brandRockDenim.com found that adding the Reviews function to its Page had a knock-on effect on sales, with positive reviews encouraging web traffic and conversions.
4. Be a go-to place for great content
From restaurants to real estate, hobbies to holidays, every business has a wealth of information and inspiration to share. Sisters Anna and Clara, founders of homeware brand Søstrene Grene , share videos packed with crafting tips and ideas that keep audiences coming back for more. Great, informative content is a powerful way to connect.
5. Make customer service your thing
Great service sets businesses apart from the crowd and keeps customers loyal. Pages messagingis a quick and easy way to answer queries and stay in touch with customers. Visit your Page admin to set your query response time, which lets Page visitors know how quickly you typically answer queries.
6. Give video a try
With around 8 billion video views on Facebook daily, it’s clear that video is winning in the engagement stakes. Don’t be put off by big brands’ high budget productions, though; homegrown video can work just as well. A spur-of-the-moment iPhone video resulted in a huge sales spike when accessories retailer Krystellie filmed and posted a short how-to video on its hair extension products.
7. Use Insights to understand what works
Available to every Page is a whole treasure trove of valuable information, in the form of Insights. Here you can find out who’s looking at your Page, when and how. You can also see which types of content they engage with most, so that you can figure out what’s working best. Insights are also handy when you’re using Facebook Ads, because they can help you decide on relevant target audiences and match up Ad copy and creative according to what interests those audiences most.
8. Promote relevant content with target audiences
Mature skin cosmetics brand Look Fabulous Forever engaged its over-55 audience very successfully through its targeted Page posts and Ads.
9. Find new audiences
A loyal following is a great starting point for growth. You can find and reach new audiences who are exactly like the kinds of people who are already your customers. Custom and Lookalikeaudiences can be created from your existing customer data, meaning that you can reach people with an interest in your product or service easily. This makes advertising on Facebook less of a guessing game—and way more cost effective than traditional channels.
10. Turn fans into customers
Thanks to new Ad options and formats, it’s now even easier than ever to turn Page fans and website visitors into customers. Many small businesses have found success with Carousel Ads that allow a selection of products to be shown at once. Holiday rentals firm Fincallorca achieves high numbers of conversions at low cost by retargeting website visitors with Facebook Ads featuring the properties they’ve browsed previously.

What Is A Static IP Address, How Do I Get One & Its Advantages / Disadvantages

Updated by Gavin Phillips on 04/15/2017
In home networks, IP addresses aren’t usually fixed, but they do fall within specific ranges. Your router will assign a new IP address automatically if another computer joins the network, or if your configuration changes. For the most part, this works out just fine — you shouldn’t notice a difference to your Internet performance or application functionality if your IP changes.
A static IP address however, is one that doesn’t change. Your computer decides upon the address it wants, and it tells the router. Why would you want to set up something like this? What are the advantages and disadvantages of doing so? Is there a better solution?

What Is A Static IP?

When we talk about IP addresses of home computers, we are usually referring to two types of address. One is your external IP address – the one that the world sees as your Internet connection. Then you have your private IP addresses internally on your home network. Even if you only have one computer on your home network, it will have a private IP given to it by the router. Private IP addresses cannot be routed over the Internet and are strictly for private use. There are a few possible ranges of private IP address, but for most home users this will be 192.168.*.* (where * can be anything).

Your router interface, for instance, is likely accessible through 192.168.0.1 — this is a private address. Your home computers might then be anything from 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.254. Most routers will just assign internal addresses on a first come first served basis. The first computer you plug into the router will send out a network request sayingI need an IP address, my hardware address is x.x.x.x.x.x” and will be assigned 192.168.0.2, then the next will get 192.168.0.3.

Your external IP address is not something you can change — it is given to you automatically by your Internet provider. You can purchase a static external IP address, but they are incredibly expensive. If you do need to access your home network from a remote location, consider getting a dynamic address that will update itself when your IP changes.  For a home network though, you are free to assign static, non-changing IP addresses to whatever computers you want. Let’s a take a look at when you would do this.

Why Would I Need A Static Private IP Address & What Are The Advantages?

Essentially, you need a static IP anytime you are trying to forward certain packets from the Internet to certain computers or devices on your home network. For example:

A Local Web Server

In order to set up a web server on your home network that is accessible by anyone in the world, you need to forward incoming requests on port 80 to your web server machine. If the web server was to restart and get a new IP from the router, the special rule that you created to forward requests on port 80 to the old server IP address wouldn’t work anymore, and your server would break.

How to Monitor Your Child's Internet Usage

The internet is a wonderful educational tool that children are increasingly expected to use to support their learning. However, the online world does have a dark side. As a modern parent, it is your responsibility to protect your children from online as well as offline dangers. Let’s take a look at how you can monitor your child’s internet usage.
Where Has Your Child Been Online?

The most basic way to find out what sites your child has been visiting is to check the browser history. All internet browsers save a record of the sites that have been visited. In Internet Explorer, you can access the internet history via the “Tools” menu, whereas in Chrome you will need to press the wrench button in the top right and select “History.” Alternatively, pressing Ctrl+H while the browser is active will bring up the history.

Sites that have been visited are shown in reverse chronological order, so you can easily scroll through to see what your child has been looking at. However, a child who resents you snooping could easily delete items from the history, so you will need to consider other ways of monitoring your child’s internet usage.

Using Your Wireless Router to Monitor Internet Usage

Some models of wireless router are able to keep a log of what sites are visited via your home internet connection. To set up logging, you will need to access your router by typing its IP address into the address bar of your browser. You can find out the IP address by opening a command window (run CMD.exe in Windows) and typing in ipconfig/all. Your IP address is the number listed under the heading “Default Gateway.”

If your router prompts you to enter a password and you have never set one, you can find out the default username and password by visiting the manufacturer’s website or looking on the packaging that your router came in.

Once you have accessed your router, you can click on “Logs” to view the activity on your network. Some routers will allow you to set up a list of blocked sites that can’t be accessed from your child’s computer. You can also ask the router to email you to let you know when your child attempts to access a blocked site.

Once you have set up logging and site blocking on your router, change the password so that your child can’t alter the settings.

Using Software to Monitor Your Child’s Internet Usage

Some parents prefer to install software to monitor their child’s internet usage. There are a number of programs on the market that can provide a detailed account of the sites that your child has visited and the interactions they have been involved in online. Let’s take a look at some of the best tools available to help you monitor and protect your child online.
  • SafetyWeb
(www.safetyweb.com)

SafetyWeb monitors your child’s activity on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. When it detects explicit content in your child’s messages, SafetyWeb sends you an alert. SafetyWeb also looks for signs that your child is involved in cyberbullying – as either the victim or the perpetrator – or that he or she is being contacted by unsuitable adults.

To use SafetyWeb, you just need your child’s email address. The service automatically detects other accounts connected with that address, such as on Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and many more sites. By showing parents what information their child is sharing, SafetyWeb opens the door for discussions about the importance of protecting privacy online.
  • SocialShield
(www.socialshield.com)

How can you know who your child is talking to online? SocialShield monitors your child’s social networking accounts and lets you know if someone suspicious tries to connect with your child. This paid service checks your child’s friends against a variety of databases and alerts you if there is a chance that a person in contact with your child is not who they claim to be. You will also be notified if an adult tries to befriend your child online.
  • McGruff SafeGuard

Once you install McGruff SafeGuard on your child’s computer, you can remotely monitor their conversations, search terms and sites visited. McGruff gathers a huge amount of information and presents it in an easy-to-understand way, translating common abbreviations used by kids so that parents can easily understand what they’re reading.

Talking to Your Child About Internet Safety

Monitoring your children’s online activity is a great way to become aware of any dangers that they might be exposed to. If you see something that concerns you, it is a good idea to speak to your children about the importance of protecting themselves online, letting them know why you don’t want them visiting certain sites and explaining what kind of behavior is appropriate on social networks.
