Tell the Truth and fool the world, I'm more than just an engineer

*This is one of the things I've been amazed by my entire life. I've run ads on my website whereas the first person to click this or that would receive $1000, no one clicked it so I partied in Bangkok. I tell people that I will do freebies for viewing various videos, they don't. Perhaps this will explain why I'm still amazed.

(To get these notions out of the way immediately, what follows may not apply to the answers to these two questions; “Does this dress make my ass look fat?” And; “Did you come?”)

These seven words have for me always held in them something deep and mystical. I can not recall when or where I first heard them, but they have stayed with me for as long as I can remember. A quick google search reveals that this saying is credited to Otto Von Bismarck who originally phrased it as; “when you want to fool the world, tell the truth.” I never knew it originated with Bismarck until a minute ago when I thought to search the phrase – as I knew it.
This aphorism exists on so many levels to me. It holds so many implications far beyond just the face value of its meaning.
To me, at least, it implies that we, as humans, have in our nature an inclination to believe the big lie rather than the plain truth. It implies that we find it difficult to believe someone when he or she is being unabashedly honest with us. (Think Chauncey Gardiner in Jerzy Kosinski’s “Being There”) That we expect people to be, as a rule, less than forthright with us. Which, in turn, implies that we may now and then be less forthright with them. It also implies that telling that “little white lie” so as not to “hurt someone’s feelings” may, in any run, short or long,  be of no value to them – or you.
It implies that the easiest, least complicated, path to “get along” in this life is simply to just tell the truth – your subjective truth, as you know it to be. As you believe it to be. In your answers, your opinions, your actions. It implies that one will have an easier, calmer life if uncluttered by the “games” one must play and the “stories” one must remember and have to keep straight in order to keep up the lie. Any lie, big or small.
And, perhaps, all kidding aside, it does, after all, apply to the answers to those two questions at the top. If we really think about it.
This wise aphorism also implies that a delicious secret resides within the person who lives it.
Perhaps in these seven words there exists a blueprint for happiness and peace of mind?
I know this simple and elegant truism to be the way. And yet, as much as I try to live it, too many times I fall short – and those times when I do fall short I do a disservice to the person I fail to be truthful with – and to myself.

Run Flat tires / How They Work

Though they first appeared in the mid-1980s, run flat tires (RFT) are now more popular than ever. With some auto manufacturers making them standard in new vehicles, more consumers are asking about run flats, their advantages, and how using them impacts driving.

WHAT ARE RUN FLAT TIRES?

Run flat tires are tires on which you can continue driving after a puncture so you can take time get to an auto shop or find a safe, level area to change your tire.
You can’t drive on them indefinitely, though. Check the manufacturer’s specifications to find out how fast and how far you can drive on your run flat tires. Bridgestone run-flat tires will allow continued operation even after a loss of some or all inflation pressure for up to 50 miles (80 km) at a maximum speed up to 50 mph (80 km/h.)

HOW DO RUN FLAT TIRES WORK?

There are two primary types of run flat tire systems: the self-supporting system and the support ring system.
In most self-supporting run flat tire systems, the tire features reinforced sidewall construction that will continue supporting the vehicle in the event of air loss. This construction allows continued operation after the loss of air pressure up to the speed and distance specified by the manufacturer.
Support ring run flat tire systems, on the other hand, employ a ring of hard rubber or another structure that can support the vehicle’s weight in an air loss condition.
Since they continue performing even though they’re “flat,” all run flat tires, regardless of the specific system type, may only be used on a vehicle equipped with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). The TPMS alerts you as soon as one of your tires loses pressure. Without it, you might not know you were driving on an underinflated tire.

BENEFITS OF RUN FLAT TIRES

You don’t have to change your tire in dangerous or uncomfortable conditions. This is perhaps the biggest benefit of run flat tires and is the one of the reasons why they were designed. With conventional tires, you have to replace a flat on the spot or have your car towed.
In a puncture situation, run flats are more stable than conventional tires. Since they’re made to support your vehicle even when they contain no air, run flat tires will help you maintain better control in a complete air loss situation than conventional tires.
As consumers continue rating safety high on the list of features they look for in a vehicle, the popularity of run flat tires is expected to grow. Since run flat tires work reliably with interconnected technologies like TPMS, it may only be a matter of time before they become the norm rather than the exception in new vehicles.

"STICKY MONEY" IN MANAGED FUTURES: INDIVIDUALS VS INSTITUTIONS

In a recent due diligence call with an emerging CTA manager, we were asked a question that we have heard many times before: which types of investors provide more "sticky money," individuals or institutions? "Sticky Money" is hedge fund slang for investors that will stay around for the long-term.  In contrast, individuals/institutions that tend to withdraw investments quickly are considered not "sticky."
The simple answer to the question is: it depends. When it comes to individuals, the level of stickiness depends on that person's personality.  Sometimes, individuals are not tolerant of drawdowns and that can lead them to pull money immediately upon a small drawdown (in many cases this ends up being a poor decision). In other cases, individual investors can be very patient, and are willing to ride the investment cycle of a CTAs performance - sitting tight through drawdowns, and watching their equity come back to new highs. Since each individual investor has a unique personality, it's hard to bunch this class of investors into one category and declare them either "sticky" or "not sticky."
Institutions behave completely different from individuals - personalities do not matter as there is a group of people making decisions instead of just one person.  An institutional investor's level of stickiness is determined by the length of experience that they have with the CTA manager.  If the institution has had a long, multi-year, relationship with the CTA manager, then their chances of "sticking" around during a large drawdown are much greater.  Conversely, a large drawdown over a short-lived relationship will most likely lead the institution to withdraw their investment from the manager.
It is a common misconception among emerging CTA managers that institutional clients provide more sticky investments than individuals. It is believed that because institutions are larger and more savvy than individuals, that they are more amenable to tolerating drawdowns than individuals are.  Institutions are considered to be better decision makers because they make all decisions absent of emotion - providing the common misconception that they would be more likely to stick around when a CTA is going through a rough patch of performance.
Moreover, positioning a CTA to only market toward institutions can be a double edged sword.  Yes, the asset allocations will be larger on a per client basis, but when there are withdrawals, the outflows will be just as fast.  For example, a CTA that has a $100M in AUM can either be made up of 5-10 institutions or 40-50 individuals.  In that example, if the CTA suffers a large drawdown, it's possible that that 20% of investors will withdraw, and it is highly likely that the CTA made up of only institutions will lose more assets during the drawdown than the CTA made up of individuals.
A sound strategy for an emerging CTA is to position their program towards both individuals and institutions.  The reasoning for doing this is simple, it diversifies your client base, and better protects your business when withdrawals occur. Moreover, by targeting both types of investors, you increase your market size, which should help grow the CTA more rapidly.

The Most Innovative Anti-Aging Treatments to Try in 2017

If you want to smooth lines. Many dermatologists don’t inject hyaluronic acid fillers in the superficial lines under the eyes because they can create a blue cast (it’s called the Tyndall effect, and it happens when the hyaluronic acid gel shows through skin).
But a new injectable collagen called Cellifique can fill those tiny lines in a natural-looking way. “It integrates into the tissue without causing that discoloration,” says Joel L. Cohen, a dermatologist in Colorado, who’s seen data from company-sponsored clinical trials on the new filler.
So far, it’s also promising for plumping sunken tear troughs and lines around the lips. Results last around nine months. Cellifique is debuting in Europe this spring and could make its way to the U.S. in about four years. So if you’re lucky, you won’t get crow’s-feet until around 2020.

If you want to abolish bags.
The only way to get rid of fat pads under the eyes has been plastic surgery, so most of us just deal. That’s where a molecule called XAF5 (traditionally used in glaucoma drugs) comes in: When applied as an ointment, XAF5 binds to fat cells under the skin and gets them to slowly release fatty acids. That makes the fat cells deflate like balloons losing air. It takes about three months of nightly use to see those undereye bags shrink.
XAF5 could be available soon, and yes (big yes), there could be potential for eliminating fat on other areas of the body, too.

6 Ways to Develop your Deductive Reasoning

Deductive reasoning is often associated with one of the most famous detectives of all, Sherlock Holmes.  This art is something that most people never fully tap into during their lifetimes but Sherlock was able to master it!  It may seem impossible to become a Sherlock but there are some ways to apply it whether you are a forensic scientist or if you are just doing accounting for your business. So here are some ways to improve our deductive reasoning.
First— Be ready to question the norms. Many people will tell you things that seem to be the case but don’t be fooled into believing everything you hear. It’s all about controlling your emotions and listening to reason.
Second—Be careful with the way you are looking at things. It is all about observation. If you analyze and think things out, you will be more likely to deduce the right answer to things. Always take the time to look at things a second time.
Third—There is often times an obvious and simple answer to most of the puzzling problems in the world today.  So rather than creating larger-than-life problems it is important to break them down, piece by piece, until we can determine what the problem really is.  In calculus we call it factoring and it is a very efficient way of taking things apart to save time and effort. Dr. Watson is consistently surprised at the simplicity of Holmes deductive pathways.
Fourth—If you are curious then you are ready to really dig deep and observe.  Curiosity is really just the will to know and understand something as a whole.  If you don’t have that then you won’t be able to motivate yourself to deduce things.  Often curiosity is the catalyst behind truly important discoveries.
Fifth—Instinct is a powerful thing to trust still. Make sure that when you get those powerful feelings that you pay heed to them. Your body sometimes is smarter than your mind.
Sixth—Work alongside a friend and come to a better decision.  By talking things out you are able to dissect and understand things more fully.
Overall, deductive reasoning can help you problem solve and have added perception as you go through life. Whether you are a student or entrepreneur, make sure that you are using these tips to become more like Sherlock Holmes.

Brief: American Rights Retained

Even if you are living permanently abroad, you still retain your American citizenship, your American passport and your voting rights. When it comes to the latter, both Republicans and Democrats are glad to help you vote for their candidates in national elections - visit http://www.RepublicansAbroad.org or http//www.DemocratsAbroad.org, and you’ll find extensive information on how to submit your ballot from wherever you are. You’ll also still be eligible to vote in state elections if you maintain an address there.
Many expats elect to apply for citizenship and passports in their new country as well, if they’re eligible. The US does not forbid dual citizenship, but certainly does not encourage it – you only need to make sure that the country you’re in allows for it (for instance, India forbids it, even though they do offer a form of overseas citizenship). Once you obtain your second nationality, the US government may contact you and ask if you meant to relinquish your American citizenship – you only need to answer “No” to keep it, they can’t take it away from you.
If, however, you are interested in relinquishing US citizenship and foregoing American rights retained, you may wish to consult our free section on renouncing US citizenship.

Mexico's Government Warns Its Citizens Of 'New Reality' In U.S.

The sudden deportation Thursday of an Arizona woman who had regularly checked in with U.S. immigration authorities for years has prompted a stark warning from Mexico's government.
Mexican nationals in the U.S. now face a "new reality," authorities warned in a statement.
"The case of Mrs. [Guadalupe] Garcia de Rayos illustrates the new reality that the Mexican community faces in the United States due to the more severe application of immigration control measures," the statement reads. "For this reason, the entire Mexican community should take precautions and keep in touch with the nearest consulate, to obtain the necessary help to face this kind of situation."
Mexico is urging its citizens in the U.S. to "familiarize themselves with the different scenarios they may face and know where to go to receive updated guidance and know all their rights."
Garcia de Rayos, 35, had lived in the U.S. for more than two decades and her two children are both U.S. citizens. The Two-Way has reported on the details of her case:
"In 2008, Garcia de Rayos was arrested while she was working at a water park, during a raid carried out by then-Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. (Arpaio's workplace raids have been challenged in court as unconstitutional; the case is ongoing.) In 2009, she was convicted of possessing false papers. In 2013, ICE says, an order for her deportation was finalized.
"But Garcia de Rayos was allowed to continue to live in Arizona, under supervision and with regular check-ins with ICE, as member station KJZZ reports."
That changed when she appeared for a check-in on Wednesday, as activists and supporters rallied outside the ICE office. The next day, she was deported to Nogales, Mexico.
Her deportation is seen as a sign of President Trump's more aggressive deportation priorities compared with Barack Obama. The former president had prioritized the deportation of people who were convicted of crimes such as aggravated felonies, terrorism or activity in a criminal street gang. Immigration-related offenses were deemed lower priority.
But Trump's executive order on immigration, issued on Jan. 25, significantly broadens the government's deportation priorities. It includes people in the U.S. illegally who "have been convicted of any criminal offense," "have been charged with any criminal offense," "have committed acts that constitute a chargeable criminal offense" or "are subject to a final order of removal," among other criteria.
"So certainly the scope of the executive order, if interpreted broadly, would be large enough to encompass most if not all of the unauthorized population," Randy Capps of the nonprofit Migration Policy Institute tells NPR's Adrian Florido.
Immigration advocates like Marisa Franco from the advocacy group Mijente fear that this is the start of a pattern. "The battle lines have been drawn. We know that this case will be replicated in many places across the country," Franco told reporters on a conference call. "And we think it's critically important for communities to take a stand."
Lawyers and activists say Garcia de Rayos' deportation could make others in her position scared to speak with immigration authorities. In fact, her attorney Ray Ybarra Maldonado told Adrian that he will advise clients in the same position to seek sanctuary in a church.
"Or if you do show up, this is what's going happen to you. But that's gotta be the advice, because it's no fun walking someone to the slaughter," he said.
Garcia de Rayos, flanked by her children, spoke to reporters in Nogales late Thursday. "I'm doing this for my kids so they have a better life. I will keep fighting so they can keep studying in their home country," she said, according to The Associated Press. "We're a united family. We're a family who goes to church on Sundays, we work in advocacy. We're active."
"It's a nightmare having your mother taken away from you," her son Angel tells Fronteras. "The person who is always there for you. Seeing her taken away in a bunch of vans like she was a huge criminal. It feels like a dream. But it's reality and we have to face it. We have to keep on fighting for what we want. And yeah, we're going to support our community and our mother. We're going to keep on fighting."

Fundamentals of Technology to Grow Your Base

New to SEO? Need to polish up your knowledge? The Beginner's Guide to SEO has been read over 3 million times and provides comprehensive information you need to get on the road to professional quality Search Engine Optimization, or SEO.

What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

SEO is a marketing discipline focused on growing visibility in organic (non-paid) search engine results. SEO encompasses both the technical and creative elements required to improve rankings, drive traffic, and increase awareness in search engines. There are many aspects to SEO, from the words on your page to the way other sites link to you on the web. Sometimes SEO is simply a matter of making sure your site is structured in a way that search engines understand.
SEO isn't just about building search engine-friendly websites. It's about making your site better for people too. At Moz we believe these principles go hand-in-hand.
This guide is designed to describe all areas of SEO—from finding the terms and phrases (keywords) that generate traffic to your website, to making your site friendly to search engines, to building links and marketing the unique value of your site. If you are confused about this stuff, you are not alone, and we're here to help.

Why does my website need SEO?

The majority of web traffic is driven by the major commercial search engines, GoogleBing, and Yahoo!. Although social media and other types of traffic can generate visits to your website, search engines are the primary method of navigation for most Internet users. This is true whether your site provides content, services, products, information, or just about anything else.
Search engines are unique in that they provide targeted traffic—people looking for what you offer. Search engines are the roadways that make this happen. If search engines cannot find your site, or add your content to their databases, you miss out on incredible opportunities to drive traffic to your site.
Search queries—the words that users type into the search box—carry extraordinary value. Experience has shown that search engine traffic can make (or break) an organization's success. Targeted traffic to a website can provide publicity, revenue, and exposure like no other channel of marketing. Investing in SEO can have an exceptional rate of return compared to other types of marketing and promotion.

Why can't the search engines figure out my site without SEO?

Search engines are smart, but they still need help. The major engines are always working to improve their technology to crawl the web more deeply and return better results to users. However, there is a limit to how search engines can operate. Whereas the right SEO can net you thousands of visitors and increased attention, the wrong moves can hide or bury your site deep in the search results where visibility is minimal.
In addition to making content available to search engines, SEO also helps boost rankings so that content will be placed where searchers will more readily find it. The Internet is becoming increasingly competitive, and those companies who perform SEO will have a decided advantage in visitors and customers.

Can I do SEO for myself?

The world of SEO is complex, but most people can easily understand the basics. Even a small amount of knowledge can make a big difference. Free SEO education is widely available on the web, including in guides like this. Combine this with a little practice and you are well on your way to becoming a guru.
Depending on your time commitment, your willingness to learn, and the complexity of your website(s), you may decide you need an expert to handle things for you. Firms that practice SEO can vary; some have a highly specialized focus, while others take a broader and more general approach.
In any case, it's good to have a firm grasp of the core concepts.
