ISIS Nuke Proofs Part 2 – the science of the small, clean neutron bomb

Once again, Jeff Smith delivers a truly devastating information bomb, one that will lay waste to entire paradigms that have become increasingly anachronistic in the modern age. For almost everyone, when they think of nuclear weapons they picture the 1950s newsreels of colossal hydrogen bombs blasting immense mushrooms clouds into the stratosphere and spreading deadly fallout over huge areas. That type of bomb still exists, but are unlikely to ever be used, they have existed for almost 70 years and no-one has ever dared to use one and I doubt anyone ever will.

However, those are very obsolete and outdated weapons, what we need to be concerned about today is four or five generations evolved from those old megatonne H-bombs – a totally different type of weapon that does not require a critical mass and therefore requires only a tiny amount of fissile material by comparison and best of all doesn’t produce a huge amount of nasty fallout and ionising radiation.

In fact, they produce no EMP, virtually no harmful fallout and only a small amount of radiation that is gone within hours.  The yield of these bombs is, of course, much smaller, in the low kilotonne range, starting around 0.5kt and scaling upwards by adding more fissile material. All these factors make these weapons far more usable than the old megatonne monsters.

Now for the really scary part – these small clean neutron bombs are also very simple and cheap to manufacture, so much so that even non-state actors such as Islamic State could feasibly manufacture them in a decent machine shop.

Then it gets even worse – you can make these things out of the used fuel rods from nuclear reactors – something that is common and, given the political situation in some countries that contain nuclear reactors, quite readily available on the black market – certainly far easier to obtain than any ‘weapons grade’ material, which has been closely monitored for decades.

This scenario totally undermines all the years of political anti-proliferation negotiations, all the treaties and international monitoring agencies, all of it is now irrelevant due to the new designs of the 4th and 5th generation as described here by Jeff.

Critical Mass

Scientists define criticality as a measure of the ability of nuclear material to sustain a fission chain reaction. If a system is subcritical, it cannot sustain a fission chain reaction. If a system is supercritical, the fission chain reactions grow greatly. A system that is “critical” is the bounding case – this means that it sustains a chain reaction with a constant rate. The critical mass of fissile material depends on many factors:

• Purity of material
• Shape of material
• Density of material
• Temperature of material
• Surrounding materials

The “bare sphere critical mass” of weapons-grade uranium and weapons-grade plutonium is approximately 52 kg and 10 kg (respectively).

The critical mass of fissile material informs the most fundamental question of nuclear weapon design. The question which scientists have asked for the first time at the beginning of the Manhattan Project and which every nuclear weapon state has asked since then is: how much fissile material is necessary for a nuclear weapon? The class of nuclear weapon design (see section nuclear weapon design ) determines the amount which is needed. For a
gun-assembled design, more fissile material is necessary than for an implosion device, for example.

The International Atomic Energy Agency defines “significant quantities” of uranium and plutonium as 25 kg and 8 kg (respectively). However, the figures which are below show that it is possible to produce reasonable nuclear yields with much less nuclear material than this, even if the technical capability is low.

Nursing Home Evictions

Tens of thousands of Louisiana residents could face eviction from nursing and group homes

(CNN)More than 30,000 Medicaid recipients in Louisiana, many in nursing or group homes, could lose their benefits due to proposed state cuts -- a situation that could force thousands to move.

Louisiana Department of Health Deputy Secretary Michelle Alletto said the agency will notify about 37,000 Medicaid recipients, whose eligibility to receive the benefit could end on July 1, they may have to move out of the nursing and group home facilities because of the lack of state funding.

The letters, which will be mailed out Thursday, also will go to Medicaid patients with developmental disabilities and some who receive home-based services to give recipients time to develop appropriate plans, the agency said. The health department also will evaluate any eligibility options, according to the agency.

"We cannot provide services with no money to pay for them," agency Secretary Dr. Rebekah Gee told reporters Wednesday.

The proposed cuts could force nursing homes to close, leaving more than 25,000 people unemployed, according to the Louisiana Nursing Home Association.

"Worried over calls from Broadway Elder Living Center advising that #Medicaid support for my 90 y/o father (a Korean War vet) and my 86 y/o mother may get cut off," David Grabert wrote on social media on Tuesday.

"Mom called me crying over this unconscionable threat to losing nursing home care desperately needed," Grabert wrote.

Grabert couldn't be reached late Tuesday.

Medicaid is a health insurance program for certain low-income individuals and their families that is jointly run by the federal government and individual states. People 65 years of age or older who meet the income and asset limits for their state are eligible for Medicaid.

More than 1 million people are part of the Medicaid program in Louisiana, health officials said.

Last month, the Louisiana House of Representatives approved a state budget that would cut four Medicaid programs for the disabled and elderly, The Times-Picayune reported. The House version of the state budget included $538 million in state health care cuts, the paper said, citing documents from the health department.

The four programs are optional programs under Medicaid that the state doesn't have to provide to maintain its status as Medicaid provider, said Jay Dardenne, commissioner of the Division of Administration.

The largest of the four programs slated for elimination is the Medicaid Long Term Care Special Income Level Program, which provides Medicaid to the elderly, blind and disabled with incomes between $750 a month and $2,250 a month or less, according to state health officials.

Alletto said that group includes 17,000 people living in nursing facilities, about 2,000 in group homes for those with developmental disabilities, another 7,000 receiving certain waivers from the health department and hundreds of other people in community-based programs.

The Louisiana Nursing Home Association said the Medicaid Long Term Care Special Income Level program provides health services for about 80% of nursing facility residents.

Alletto said other Medicaid programs are slated to be affected in the proposed budget, including outpatient drug and alcohol treatment for those with a substance use disorder and mental health programs for adults.

Dardenne said the health department need about $648 million to fund the programs slated to be cut.

"The budget that left the House of Representatives, as we all know, has eviscerated the Medicaid program," Dardenne said.

'The stress .... could kill people'

Jim Tucker, CEO of CommCare Corp., a nonprofit that operates 12 nursing homes in Louisiana, said residents could be affected by the glum news.

"Our patients are old, they are frail. They have multiple health issues,' said Tucker, a former speaker of the Louisiana House. "And the stress of coming to realize that they are going to lose their funding that allows them to stay in a nursing home, and have no other known option, I believe could kill people."

"It is the worst treatment for Louisiana 's greatest generation that you could possibly fathom coming out of Baton Rouge," Tucker said.

The Senate hasn't voted on the budget yet, The Times-Picayune reported.

The budget shortfall is largely a result of the elimination of certain state taxes, which are set to expire on June 30, The Times-Picayune said. Dardenne said the loss amounts to about $1.4 billion.

Once residents are deemed ineligible for the benefits, "they will have to be discharged from their nursing facility overnight, leaving their families to scramble to find other housing options and the vital healthcare services that they require to continue to live," said Mark Berger, director of the Louisiana Nursing Home Association

Changes to the Medicaid system, however, will not happen overnight.

The state would have to get approval from federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and nursing homes residents can appeal the state's request, Tucker said. If the state's request is approved, the state would have create plan to relocate Medicaid recipients.

Some nursing homes are hoping for the best.

"We've been knowing about this, but now it's real and it's not about the letter, it's about the faces of real people who we've been serving for years and years," Sister Ann Lacour of Chateau de Notre Dame, a New Orleans faith-based retirement community, told CNN affiliate WVUE.

She added: "Hopefully we won't have to work with it because our Legislature will find a solution to answer this."

The World Bank and the development delusion

The World Bank can be an effective tool in the fight against poverty with fundamental changes in its power structure.

When Jim Yong Kim took the helm of the World Bank in July, progressives in the development community hailed it as a turning point in the fight against poverty. For once the Bank is headed not by a US military boss or a Wall Street executive, but by an actual expert in the field of development. Jeffrey Sachs called Kim's appointment a "tremendous step" toward making the World Bank a place "where the world convenes to address the dire, yet solvable, problems of sustainable development". 

I have deep respect for Kim and his past accomplishments, but I do not share the optimism that has overcome the development community. I find it astounding that we continue to place our hope for the end of poverty in an international financial institution that is fundamentally beholden to the interests of Wall Street and the US government. And we do so against all the available evidence. History shows that most of the countries that have come under the sway of the World Bank - and its sister institution, the IMF - have experienced declining development outcomes over the past 30 years or so. 

This is either an unfortunate mistake that can be fixed with a little dose of better leadership, as Sachs and the rest seem to believe, or an indication that the Bank doesn’t actually care much about development and poverty reduction, and that it's after something else entirely. 

Structural adjustment 

To explain the Bank's dismal record on development we have to understand its core economic strategy, namely, "structural adjustment", which has been in place since about 1980. When the Bank gives out loans to poor countries, they come with strict conditions attached that require debtors to restructure their economies in line with neoliberal policyby cutting subsidies and price controls; privatising public utilities; curbing regulations on labour and pollution; removing trade tariffs; and allowing foreign corporations to buy up public assets, bid on government contracts and repatriate profits at will. 

E.J. Dionne Jr.: Why all the 'nones' who have given up on organized religion?

They’re put off by displays of hypocrisy and intolerance.

Do you wonder why the proportion of Americans unaffiliated with organized religion has skyrocketed in recent decades?

This trend is especially pronounced among adults under 30, roughly 40 percent of whom claim no connection to a religious congregation or tradition and have joined the ranks of those the pollsters call the “nones.”

To understand how so many now prefer nothing to something when it comes to religion, ponder the news over the past few days.

President Donald Trump finally admitted that he had paid a porn star to keep quiet about an alleged affair as we saw unfold what we’ll call Jesuitgate, the controversy over who should be chaplain of the House of Representatives.

On Thursday, Speaker Paul Ryan backed down from his effective dismissal of the Rev. Patrick Conroy, a Jesuit priest, as chaplain. Mr. Ryan had said he asked the cleric to quit for providing inadequate “pastoral services” but denied that Father Conroy was ousted because of a mild prayer for justice he delivered during the debate over the GOP tax cut.

The phrase “pastoral services” must inspire a chuckle from your average millennial agnostic. It makes the work of holy men and women sound like the this-worldly tasks of the accountant, mechanic or dentist.

Father Conroy had initially agreed to Mr. Ryan’s request to step aside but withdrew his resignation in a quietly stinging letter. The priest noted that he had never been informed of the shortcomings of his “pastoral services.” If he had, he would “have attempted to correct such ‘faults.’ “

Father Conroy also quoted Mr. Ryan’s chief of staff, Jonathan Burks, as telling him “something like ‘maybe it’s time we had a chaplain that wasn’t a Catholic.’ “ Mr. Ryan’s office vehemently denied this, but the speaker announced he didn’t want to have a “protracted fight” and that Father Conroy could stay.

Many of us could have told Mr. Ryan that it’s a mistake to mess with a Jesuit. But think about it: The House Republican leadership was more inclined to push out a chaplain than to impose accountability on a president who is a proven liar and trashes the rule of law for his own selfish purposes day after day.

This degree of partisan irresponsibility only aggravates the already powerful skepticism among the young about what it means to be religious. In their landmark 2010 book, “American Grace,” the scholars Robert Putnam and David Campbell found that the rise of the nones was driven by the increasing association of organized religion with conservative politics and a lean toward the right in the culture wars.

Mr. Putnam and Mr. Campbell found that millennials with tolerant and open views on homosexuality were more than twice as likely to be religious nones as their statistically similar peers with conservative or traditionalist views on homosexuality. Many young people came to regard religion, the authors wrote, as “judgmental, homophobic, hypocritical and too political.”

If you want an exquisite hypocritical moment, consider that last Thursday, the day Mr. Trump had to admit his lies on the Stormy Daniels payoff, the president tweeted to commemorate the National Day of Prayer. “Prayer is the key that opens us to the treasures of God’s mercies and blessings,” he proclaimed in a pious 42-second video. I guess Mr. Trump can use some mercy right now.

What’s maddening about all this is that religion has a strong case to make for itself — to the young and everyone else — given its historical role as a prod to personal and social change and the ways in which movements for justice have been inspired through the centuries by the words of Exodus, Micah, Isaiah, Amos and Jesus.

Father Conroy was getting at this in the most uncontroversial way possible when he spoke in his now-contested prayer of how “our great nation” has created “opportunities that have allowed some to achieve great success, while others continue to struggle.” If a chaplain could be rebuked for voicing that simple and undeniable truth, what’s the point of the “religious liberty” that Mr. Trump and his GOP allies celebrate?

And when will those who advertise themselves as religion’s friends realize they can do far more damage to faith than all the atheists and agnostics put together?

Obesity Is Now A Bigger Killer Than Smoking

The recent Healthy Survey for England shows that currently 26 percent of adults (defined as persons 16 years and above) are obese. In 2014, 58 percent of women and 65 percent of men were overweight or obese, and these figures are rising.

Persons with BMIs (Body Mass Index) of higher than 25 are condisered overweight, and those with BMIs that range between 30 and 34.9 are moderately obese.

A study by Public Health England shows that obesity has now eclipsed smoking as the number one cause of death in the UK. Smoking-related illnesses account for 10.7% of deaths, but those relating to obesity now stand at 10.8%, and according to a Harvard study the amount of smoking-related deaths is decreasing yearly.

The Public Health England report also notes that a whopping 40% of NHS resources are spent on treating diseases and ailments that stem lifestyle factors like obesity, with Simon Stevens, NHS head, saying our "junk food diets" are to blame.

This is not cute, it's disgusting.

Professor Kevin Fenton, PHE director of Health and Wellbeing, added that “as a nation we are eating far too many fats and far too much sugar.” Trans fats and saturated fats are particularly in the crosshairs, with the former offering no nutritional benefit whatsoever.

In the 2016 UK Budget report, George Osbourne announced the introduction of sugar tax of up to 20% on the soft drinks industry, which is due to come into effect in 2018. The tax is set to target fizzy drinks in particular, including Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Lucozade, and beverage manufactures will be taxed according to how much sugar their drinks contain. The reports predict that a tax on sugary drinks would prevent 3.7 million people becoming obese in the next decade.

While we've all known for a long time that a poor diet and lack of exercise can lead to health complications, it's always unsettling to see just how profound the effects can be. Despite the current social media trend for downing green juices and doing downward dogs every morning, the study is a harsh reminder that as a nation, our habits are far from healthy.

New Pamphlet: “Leftist Indoctrination in Our K-12 Public Schools”

The Freedom Center’s new pamphlet documents how the Left is subverting our students’ education

The same “progressives” who have made American higher education into indoctrination chambers for cultural Marxism, identity racism and other anti-American ideas are now targeting our K-12 public schools.

• At the Edina School District in Edina, Minnesota, all employees, even bus drivers, must take “Equity and Racial Justice Training” instructing them that “dismantling white privilege” is at the core of the district’s mission. They must acknowledge their racial guilt, and embrace the district’s “equity” ideology.
• To enhance “cultural diversity,” students at Maryland’s La Plata High School were ordered to copy the Islamic creed “Shahada” which states in part, “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.” One worksheet distributed by the school states, “Most Muslims’ faith is stronger than the average Christian.”
• As part of transgender instruction in Rocklin Academy in Rocklin, California, a male kindergartener was reintroduced to classmates as a girl. A first grader at the school was sent to the principal’s office after she called the student by his given name on the playground – apparently unaware that the five year old had changed gender.

These horror stories are not exceptions to the rule. Our public schools have traditionally been the cornerstone of our country’s democratic values, teaching students how to think not what to think. No longer.

We have already had an early success in Virginia where State Delegate Dave La Rock has introduced HJ 117, a bill to establish a code of ethics and professional responsibility in the state’s public schools.  Similar efforts are under way in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Nebraska where legislators on the education committees are in the early stages of drafting legislation, and legislators in a growing list of states are expressing interest in our campaign.

WHY YOU SHOULD ALWAYS QUESTION THE STATUS QUO

Change is progress, stagnation is death. That is the truest truth, especially in capitalism and thus also in trading. Grow or die. But then the real question is, why do so many people want to go backward? Everything was better before, we will make this and that great again, bla bla bla, yada yada yada. And why are so many people afraid of change when change is the only thing that ever brought humanity forward?

In Germany, we have this saying:”The farmer doesn’t eat what he doesn’t know”…that exactly describes the herd mentality. People are afraid of change because it involves an unknown factor. What will happen if we do that? What will happen if do this? I want to go back to my mommy. Where is my mommy? That is exactly what is happening in politics and in the world right now.

And also in trading. People are scared of algorithms. Will chart trading still work? Will human traders even be able to trade in a few years from now, or will the market be completely cluttered and torn apart by billions of transactions each second in the great algo war?

Questions, questions, questions, all I see are questions, but no actions! Adapt or die. Most people worry, and that worry paralyzes them. Instead of reading, learning, improving, changing, they close their eyes and keep running until they fall off the cliff. And then they blame everyone and everything, but not themselves.

If you are so worried about algos, why don’t you look at Python? Read up on it. Cloudquant, Quantopian. The tools are there, the information is there, for free. Get educated and then make an informed decision instead of worrying and crying like a baby. This is really paradoxical to me, because when I am worried about something, then I do everything I can to dissolve those worries. But most people just bury their head in the sand. Crazy.

There Is Always Something That Has To Be Done Better

The Status Quo was never satisfying to me because there is always something to improve. When I was working for a big corporation, the managers there sometimes said to me “no, we don’t like your suggestions, we have always done it this way and we will keep doing it this way”. Well, that is the most stupid thing I have ever heard in my life.

Just because something has been around for a long time, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a better alternative. The opposite is the truth – the longer something is around, the more likely it will become obsolete. This is also true for people that don’t change. They become an artifact of the past, ready to be exchanged with a new, hungry and curious person.

You always need to question the Status Quo, in everything you do. After all, the greats in the history of mankind were always the disruptive ones. From Socrates to Cesar to Elon Musk to Steve Jobs to Muhammad Ali. They were all very unique. Why? Because they looked at the Status Quo and said “wait a moment. This is not right. This can be done better, and this as well”, and so on.

And yes, this is very true for trading, as well. You should always question the Status Quo of your trading strategy, but you have to do it with a system – that is, a trading journal. And by this I mean you should not worry or doubt your system, but you should always ask yourself whether what you are doing still makes sense in relation to the current market conditions. Review, study, learn, improve, progress.

The markets are ever changing, the world is ever changing, and the worst thing you can do is to look away and ignore it. Or even worse, go backward and vote for conservative politicians or opt to stick with your trading strategy only because it worked for the last 5 years and now it stopped. This will only bring you disaster.

And the beauty about this is that it is an organic process. Once you get used to the process of reviewing, seeing things in perspective, and adapting, it will be the most normal thing for you to do, like breathing.

Death (Change) Is The Big Equalizer

Big companies like Yahoo refused to change, or they didn’t see that the world around them was changing and they ultimately perished. Even McDonalds had to change after 50 years of growth because their business model suddenly stopped working as it used to. Car companies, delivery businesses, bookstores, restaurants, the list goes on and on. Everything eventually becomes outdated.

That is especially true for leaders. When you are catching up, you are hungry. You have the drive. You want to be number one, the best. But once you have actually become the leader, you become complacent, arrogant, rigid, unflexible. Someone else will eventually take your place. Empires come and go. It’s a natural cycle, life and death.

In trading, it is the same. Everyone thinks “once I have a strategy, I am set for life and I can trade it for the rest of my life” – no, that’s not how it works. Even traders of classical chart patterns, which have now been around for almost 100 years, had to make adjustments to how they trade these patterns in order to thrive and survive.

Whenever someone says “we don’t need this, we didn’t need it before”, be very, very careful. They have already become dead weight. Distance yourself. Progress is the only way to prosperity.

We as a human species have only come so far because we are the most adaptable species on this planet. I reinvent myself every day. I become 1% better every day. And that is the secret of my success, the magic sauce.

Changes Equal Chances

So before you send me an email next time asking “how long has your strategy been working, how long do you think it will work, what about algos, what about changing liquidity?” and so on, simply take a look at yourself: you are seeing all of this, how the conditions change, which is good, but you see it as a threat, which is bad.

See it as a chance instead. When the world changes, there will always be winners and losers. When old and established structures are broken, this creates opportunity. Be happy about that, because no change, no opportunity, especially for newcomers.

Some of the best musicians out there are the ones that have no classic musical education, why? Because their thinking is not deadlocked by 500-years old theories. They simply do what feels right. I even think that the internet is both a blessing and a curse. A blessing because now you can get all the information about trading strategies for free and learn in a short amount of time what took others years to comprehend. And it’s also a curse because you are taken away the chance to make up your own mind, to see charts and trading with the eyes of a toddler, so to speak.

Of course, my favorite arch enemy, the education system, does not teach you how to criticize the Status Quo, because they don’t need and don’t want people like that. They want to keep the Status Quo, so they can keep their power, their money, their way of life at the cost of others.

So you will have to teach yourself how to do that. Critical thinking is a skill.
