Nearly six years after the largest and most expensive inland oil spill in American history, Enbridge Inc. has agreed to pay a $177 million in a settlement announced July 20, 2016.
Here's a look at the past six years of the oil spill:
Oil spill alert
July 26, 2010
A Consumers Energy employee calls the Enbridge control center to alert them of the oil spilling into Talmadge Creek, which feeds into the Kalamazoo River. Enbridge responds with efforts to contain the oil, and officials from Kalamazoo County and Calhoun County also respond. A state of emergency is declared the following day.

'State of disaster'
July 28, 2010:
Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm declares the spill area a "state of disaster."
The next day, Calhoun County Health Department advised residents of about 30 to 50 homes north and northwest of the oil spill site to evacuate their residences.
